Biography and art education
Victoria (Vika) Benson is a London-based artist whose work includes painting, collage, sculpture, and ceramics.
Drawing from her Russian, Georgian, and Jewish heritage, Vika's art is deeply influenced by her experiences and her diverse social, political, and geographical environments. Her bold works interrogate power dynamics, trust, love, naivety, joy, horror, and resilience.
Vika's protagonists are often strong women, a blend of the women she has known and her perspective on the world. She draws parallels between old and new ideas and values.
Before dedicating herself fully to art, Vika was a senior medical doctor in Israel for 22 years. In 2014, she moved to the UK to pursue her passion for art more intensively. She studied at Morley College, Hamstead School of Art, The Art Academy, and Turps Banana Art School( private mentoring and corresponding courses)and received private mentoring from Ceri Hand. Since 2021, Vika has taken painting courses at The Essential School of Painting, where she has exhibited her work in end-of-year shows.
Artist Statement
I have gradually consolidated my artistic vision through intensive painting and sculpture practice since 2013.
My approach could be described as modernist. I use intuition to guide the construction of my painting, and my earned experience with materials helped me express those thoughtful and emotional concepts.
I am trying to make my narratives and visual imagery as accessible as possible to visually communicate with a viewer so that a viewer can flood it with their associations and responses.
